Uganda – Election and Banning

Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi) ran against the sitting President, Yoweri Museveni, in the 14th January 2012 general election.  The results are due within two days.

However, earlier this month, Facebook confirmed taking down many accounts that supported the National Resistance Movement (NRM).  It is Yoweri Museveni’s party.  The seventy-six-year-old has been in power for almost thirty-five years.

Then, on the 12th of the month, the sitting president placed a ban on all social media platforms and messaging apps.  These include Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Whatsapp.

The president stated, “If you want to take sides against the NRM, then that group should not operate in Uganda. We cannot tolerate this arrogance of anybody coming to decide for us who is good and who is bad.”

Update

Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner of the election on the 16th of January.

Pedestrians are not beggars at the side of the road, asking drivers to show them mercy by allowing them to get to the other sid...
