Somalia - Famine

In July 2011, the UN declared a famine in several areas in Somalia.  About 258,000 people lost their lives during this time, and thousands more were displaced.  This declaration was not made since the previous outbreak in 1991 – 1992.

The Guatemalan Quetzal is this country’s legal currency.   The word quetzal is from the country’s national bird, the Resplendent Quetzal.   Many years ago, the tail feathers of these beautiful birds were used as currency.
