East Timor – Independence(s)?

In the 1600s Portugal invaded East Timor, and in 1975 it withdrew its hold on the country.  A short civil war quickly followed, and the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor proclaimed the country as an independent one.
However, about a month later, Indonesia invaded the country and proclaimed it its 27th Providence.  It is said that this rule is responsible for the death of at least 200,000.
On 20th May 2002, East Timor became independent, and Xanana Gusmao became the first President of the country.
